Written during a clergy study day on “being the ‘church in every community”in a divided nation” at Lichfield cathedral.
~~~~~
Brittle leaves that gild rain-laquered pavement
disintegrate beneath my feet as I,
coat zipped, hands pocketed, approach a day spent
interpreting the fractures of our times.
My fingers find their way, as is their custom,
to beads of olive wood and knotted cord
that anchor mind and soul amidst life’s gusting
winds that clamour not to be ignored.
As I walk and pray my eyes are lifted
to notice those who share this leaf strewn place.
Beneath umbrellas, headscarves, hats, I’m gifted
a glimpse of Christ within each weary face.
Like crumpled leaves tossed by November’s bluster
I cling to hope with what strength I can muster.
